Hit and Run IV

He was desperate. The useless boys he had sent to take care of Somto Ekeh had failed. They were just two, so he decided to take care of them himself, just to be sure they don’t rat him out. As if that wasn’t enough, the little miss perfect daughter of Chief had been snooping around, asking questions. Couldn’t she just let sleeping dogs lie? She even asked Kanyisola about the meeting with Chief and Ahmed the driver had unknowingly told him about her inquisition. Well, it was a pity, he actually liked her. He even dreamt of taking her to bed and getting high with pleasure, he touched himself as he saw images of her perfect body. But right now, she’d be more useful lying in a coffin than lying in his bed. He thought to himself, it would be easier to get her father’s company once she’s dead. He smiled to himself as he picked up his phone and made a call. “You already know what to do”, he spoke to the person at the other end of the line, “don’t fail”, he hung up and continued touching himself.

Daberechi had little time for fun since she returned from Enugu. She had a lot of work to do in the office and no excuse to be in the house all the time since Chika wasn’t there anymore. She missed her little cousin a lot but she thought it was safer for her to be with her family. Daby and Uncle Somto had decided not to tell Aunt Tricia and the children that they were being guarded. The body guards followed them around and monitored the house discreetly. So far, so good, nothing fishy had happened. Today however, Daby decided to rest, it was a Saturday, she deserved to have a weekend. She didn’t really have things to do for fun other than read novels, whenever she was free or watch Big brother Naija because of Alex, if not for anything, she liked her green hair. She sat on the couch in her living room. Flipping through the pages of Dan Brown’s lost symbol, she thought of Kaycee and whatever secret he was unfolding. She didn’t like thinking about him, or how her body responded to his presence or how she’s always glad to see and admire his beautiful face. “Stop that, Daby”, she scolded herself, “you are not interested in irrelevant things like this.”
Just then, her phone rang. Talk of the devil, she rolled her eyes. “Hello”, she tried to sound indifferent. “You home?” The voice at the end of the line asked. “Yes, and I hope you ain’t thinking of coming, it’s not allowed”, she replied. He chuckled, “don’t flatter yourself, vixen.” Before she could retort, he continued, “meet me at Blue Whale hotel in 15 minutes, I’m in room 38”, he hung up. “Ahh, that bastard”, Daby screamed, “he hung up on me again and expects me to meet him in 15 minutes.” Blue Whale hotel was actually a 15minute drive from her house but she had to get dressed, obviously. She lazily dragged herself from the couch and stomped the stairs to her room. “I’m so going to kill him, who even names a hotel Blue whale…” she kept talking to herself. She got to her room and took out a green jumpsuit from her wardrobe. She decided to wear little makeup which was made perfect by her pink lipstick that complemented her chocolate complexion. She wore her Christian Dior fragrance, smiled at her reflection in the mirror and left the house.
She got to the hotel about 20 minutes later and knocked on the door of room 38. Kaycee opened the door, “you are late, heck, you are always late, what if I had another appointment that would give me money?” She walked into the room and dropped her bag on the table, then faced him, “you are still here, so you desperately need my money.” He laughed, then looked at her closely. Was she wearing makeup? And by God, that jumpsuit brought out every curve she thought she hid. “Did you dress up for me?” he asked, stepping close to her. “Oh please, don’t flatter yourself”, Daby said, stepping backwards, “what do you think you are doing?”
“Seducing you”, he replied, still stepping closer. “Well, sorry, but I wouldn’t get involved with someone as disturbed as you”, she said, moving backward until she bumped the wall. Damn it, no more escape. “Says the lady who is obsessed with finding a killer”, he said, tracing his fingers on her face. She gasped, his lips were close to hers, “still, I don’t mix business with pleasure”, she tried to sound uninterested. She looked at his lips for a millisecond and pushed him away for her to wriggle free.  “OK, back to business, for now”, he replied, “Johnson and Kanyisola have been seeing each other… jeez, not in that way”, he added quickly, when he saw the look of disgust on her face. She exhaled, “they have to see each other. Mr Johnson is important in my company and Kanyisola is the land surveyor. Does that have anything to do with the Olawole lands?” “Well, some Osaro Wellington purchased a plot of land at the Olawole area and died two days later”, he paused to see her reaction then continued, “a little birdie told me there’s a natural resource there, that’s why they don’t want anyone buying and probably why the Osaro guy died.” Daby was awed and at the same time confused. “Are you saying that Johnson and Kanyisola are behind the deaths, probably that of my father cos of their numerous meetings?” she asked him with enough daggers in her eyes. “I’m not saying anything, vixen, I’m just saying what I found out”, Kaycee said, opening the door, “you’ll send my money, I’ll find out the natural resource there. I think you should leave now.” Daby didn’t argue, she was too stunned and lost in thought to say anything. What natural resource could be in those lands? Could the man she trusts with her company be the one behind her father’s death?
“Vixen”, Kaycee brought her back. “Hmph, my name is Daberechi or Daby, not vixen”, she said as she walked towards the door. He grabbed her hand and looked her in the face, “I’ll see you soon, then we can talk about pleasure, vixen.” He let go off her and she left the room.
